Stone Fruits

Stone fruits are one of the most varied groups, including many of the fruits that come to mind when considering the word ‘fruit.’ Peaches, mangoes, apricots, cherries, and even some well-known ‘berries’ are all stone fruits. Examples of the latter include blackberries and raspberries.

Botanically known as ‘drupes,’ stone fruits are characterized by their thin skin and a stone or pit at the center that contains the seed. Hence the name. The thick and fleshy layer between the skin and the pit is the edible part. It surrounds and protects the pit.
